Fleet manager salary in Brazil: minimum pay, what affects it
What should be included in the calculation of a fleet manager's salary? What is the average monthly pay for this role?
This is a very common question, but exact figures are not discussed much. Why is that? The answer is simple: there are factors beyond the duties performed that influence a fleet manager's monthly pay.
For example, where is the carrier located? Depending on the state, the figure may be higher or lower because of regional demand. Another factor: how much experience does the person applying for the role have? In most cases, the greater the experience, the higher the pay offer.
To understand in more depth what is included in the salary of a fleet manager, keep reading with one important caution: figures published in previous years, such as the 2021 minimum pay cited in this text, should be treated as a historical reference before any salary decision.
What does a fleet manager do?
(Video in Portuguese.)
The manager's work involves many tasks, from doing the strategic planning for the fleet to setting goals and gathering results.
They also need to manage revenue and inspection costs, keep track of performance indicators, and create optimization plans for the fleet's processes and operations. In logistics-related roles, it is also common to coordinate operations, keep track of processes, define performance metrics and report on plans, progress and results.
Because of the complexity of many tasks and because some of them involve bureaucratic processes, many managers have a higher or technical education in business administration. For occupations close to supply chain management, the occupational reference consulted indicates that many roles require a four-year bachelor's degree, although not all do.
In addition, the fleet manager should always be studying and staying up to date in order to bring the best solutions to their fleet.

Why is this role important?
From the tasks they are responsible for, you can already see that this position is extremely important. In fact, the manager is also responsible for always being in contact with the other employees within the carrier.
Those responsible for the company's finances, for example. As well as those responsible for vehicle maintenance and the drivers.
Beyond that, tasks that determine the survival of the fleet and its vehicles are also the manager's responsibility. Want to know what they are?
We can mention: planning trip routes, selecting and buying modern and economical vehicles, overseeing tire management, creating schedules for preventive maintenance, and so on. In practice, choosing routes with an eye on savings, combining trips when it makes sense and organizing resources are examples of decisions that can affect the operation's cost, availability and predictability.
Who hires a fleet manager?
Usually, companies that work with road freight or passenger transport. There are other types of transport that likewise look for qualified people for this role, but that may require different knowledge.
After all, a company that provides air travel has different knowledge and needs from companies that transport with trucks. See the logic?
In any case, it is much more common to find openings in the road freight transport sector. The old data on formal hires under the CLT (Brazil's labor code), which compared the last year with 2019, is no longer useful to guide a current decision without a new check at the source.
What will help determine a fleet manager's salary?
Besides all the duties that end up setting a base figure for a fleet manager's salary, other "external" factors can influence earnings.
As we mentioned at the beginning, the state where you work will have an impact on the figures, and so will your experience and education in the field. In addition, the size of the company is an important factor. The larger the company, the better the figure they can offer.
For this reason, it is difficult to determine an exact figure to present here.
There is an agreement between the union of workers in the role of Fleet Manager and employers' unions setting the minimum pay for fleet managers in 2021 at R$ 3,853.00 for a 43-hour working week throughout Brazil. Since this figure is from 2021, it should be read as a historical reference, not as a promise of current compensation.
Even so, a fleet manager's salary may be determined by the minimum wage set in Brazil at the time or even by a regional minimum pay. The responsibilities taken on also come into the analysis: planning, cost control, keeping track of indicators, coordinating processes and communicating results can increase the complexity of the role.
